Are you worth it?

Account Handlers

Been in the same job for a while? Got a sneaking suspicion that Bazza, who’s only just joined has come in on more cash than you? Feeling unloved and unwanted?

Don’t worry I’m not going to offer you some working from home money making scheme painting gnomes, all I’m suggesting is that you have a look at your role and your salary and give yourself a realistic benchmark before you go storming into the corner office asking for a pay rise.

Firstly let’s make it clear, there is a way to approach the subject, on a night out with the team after your 4th Jagerbomb is not ideal. In a review or a one to one meeting is always your best bet, so my advice would be to stick to that.

You’ve picked your time and place, so what do you go for and how do you know what you’re worth?

According to www.MAD.co.uk Digital Media salaries rose 8% in the second half of 2010, so an 8% increase wouldn’t be a bad place to start but if you’re 20% below the market as it is, then you need to do your research first.

You could take a look at Brand Republic’s salary survey from the start of the year, but in my opinion the brackets are wide and the averages a little low, here it is anyway - http://www.brandrepublic.com/go/media/article/1048170/media-weeks-salary-survey-2011-paid-enough/

There are too many areas within Digital to cover all aspects of them in one blog, so let’s start with Account Handlers, below is my insight into where you should be in the pay scale given your level:

Account Handlers

Account Executive           £17-25k

Account Manager             £27-38k

Account Director              £50-60k

Group AD                        £65-80k

Client Services Director    £85-100k

There might be exceptions to this and I’m sure there are some Group AD’s who wouldn’t get out of bed for £80k, but they are the exceptions not the rules. Likewise there may be Account Executive's thinking they are being robbed at only £15k and I would have to agree with you!

I have to make it clear that these are my subjective opinions on salaries in the market place as of today, and that there may well be £3-5k to add on for London weighting, but all in all, if you’re in this ball park you’re doing ok.

Feel free to add your input or give your opinion on the above and tune in next week for a rundown of technical roles! PHP, .Net, Java, Interface Developers, UX and more to follow.....
